I'M FREE
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free, I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard Him call, I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I found that peace at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh a kiss, oh yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened, with times of sorrow, I wish
you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much, good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.
Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now. He set me free.

Harry, Grand Daughter Jazmine 2 -1/2 and wife Cookie—2007
Harry J. Bernstein, son of Esther and Frank Bernstein, was born in Detroit on October 23rd, 1934. He was the oldest of three kids, having had a younger brother and sister. Both sets of grandparents emigrated from Russia, ironically both from Kiev.

Harry was born and raised Jewish. As a young man, at some point after his Bar Mitzvah, he stopped following the Jewish faith and traditions. He never strongly identified with any other religious following, but did honor his ethnicity by participating and contributing to a Jewish based organization, 'Boys Town of Jerusalem' in Israel. This organization provides homes and education for young immigrants of the newly-created State of Israel. No student is ever turned away due to inability to pay tuition. He also felt strong ties to the tragedies of the Holocaust, and would frequently read articles or watch television programming that referenced this horrific event.

As a child, Harry grew up in Highland Park, Michigan. Harry had an extremely high IQ. In middle school, he wrote a paper that his teacher thought was so good, there was no way he could have written it, so she gave him a failing grade! This of course was untrue, he did write it. Harry seemed to be a walking book of knowledge, and knew a little about everything. He seemed to take joy in knowing a little trivia about the most obscure things. He was the type of person you would want as a life line on game shows like “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”. He was a walking calculator as well. Harry could add figures in his head almost as fast as you could type them on a calculator, and usually accurately, if not within 1% of being accurate.

After graduating high school, Harry attended Michigan State University, and later transferred to Wayne State University. Upon earning an Accounting degree, he explored the idea of world travel. After much research and consideration, he spent 3 months living in Mexico, embracing the culture, learning the language and really developed a passion for Mexican music, especially Salsa and Merengue. When his 3 month stay was up, his new found friends gave him a parting gift of hand-made bongos. Little did he know at the time that this gift would be the beginning of the path to the rest of his life.

One day, as he strolled down the streets of Detroit, Harry spotted a set of bongos in a music store window. In the store, browsing around, he was astounded at the markup of instruments, knowing what they could be purchased for in Mexico. His interest was peeked at the idea of starting an importing business. He first began with leather handbags, which he sold here locally to Saks Fifth Avenue, Hudsons and a few other high end department stores. After the first shipment however, the quality was not the same at all, and the stores declined from purchasing them any further. He was stuck with tons of bags, which he sold or gave to his mother’s friends and acquaintances. However, he still remained interested in importing Latin goods, but this time decided to try his hand at Latin instruments. He started mainly with hand percussion, bongos, congas, maracas, guiros, and claves, selling to musical merchandise wholesalers.
